Discover Mackintosh

"There are very few fashion brands that can claim to have an entire genre of clothing named after them, but Mackintosh is one"

John Sugden

Mackintosh is an enduring figure in the menswear landscape. They began nearly two centuries ago as an outerwear company specializing in rubberized cotton raincoats. Their garments became so popular that the word “mac” (from Mackintosh) has become the generic term for the single-breasted style of raincoat that they’ve come to champion. Today, their coats are highly sought after by both men and women around the world, and they’re as beloved for their utilitarian function as they are for their style and strong British heritage.

The company’s origins go back to 1823, when a Scottish chemist named Charles Macintosh invented a new way of waterproofing cloth by “rubberizing” it. At the time, most people protected themselves from the rain with oilcloth, much like what you’d find today on a Barbour jacket. These worked fine, generally speaking, but they wouldn’t keep people dry in heavier downpours. Mackintosh’s coats did, however, which is what made them famously popular.

There are three things that make Mackintosh so protective. First, there’s the rubberized material, which is produced by spreading liquid rubber between two pieces of fabric, and then pressing the material with heat in order to bond them together. In addition, the seams are sealed with backing tape and the pockets are affixed with glue. This gives their coats a three-layer system of cloth and rubber, completely protected even at the seams, which guarantees that the wearer will stay dry no matter what the conditions. It’s for this reason why the British Army fought both world wars in Mackintosh coats, and why modern designers such as Nigel Cabourn and Junya Watanabe incorporate genuine Mackintosh fabrics into their products.

We love Mackintosh’s classic, yet modern look, their fitted silhouette, and quality of make. Every man deserves to have a Mackintosh coat in his closet, so he can smile and be well-dressed even on the foulest of bad-weather days
