Gray

Discover Gray

The creation of Gray required the knitting together of disparate threads of British and Italian menswear history. The brand began as an English perfumer, which sold knitwear suffused with its own scents in the 1920s. After closing, the company lay dormant for decades until it was discovered by Alfredo Argiro', then creative director of the legendary now-dismantled knitwear brand Ballantyne.

Alfredo and his colleague Giacomo Canessa left Ballantyne together to relaunch Gray in 2011. Gray reappears as if it had been waiting in an English great uncle's dresser all these many decades. The classic styles evoke an era at the twilight of Britain's primacy on the world stage, still confident in its costume and character if not its navy.

But Alfredo has also turned Gray around - literally in the case of the logo, which he sometimes shows written backwards. The knitting is done in Perugia (home of the Italian "Baci" chocolates, which are as to Hershey's Kisses as ragu' bolognese is to ketchup), often with new stitches that didn't exist back when transatlantic travel was done by boat. Gray is living its second life updated for a changed world. Sometimes you don't have to wait for the third time to get some charm.
